About an hour away from the luxury hotels at the cost of Mombasa you will find New Hope Children’s Centre and Primary School. The school is located just on the outskirts of the Bengala slums. The driving force behind the school, Japheth Eyama, began to help children from the streets of Mombasa in 2005. Now there are around 56 lucky children between the ages 4-20 years who have their homes at the orphanage. Since 2005, the Centre has developed tremendously and besides the orphanage also includes a school with classes from kindergarten to the 8th grade, with nearly 513 children between the ages 2-16 years. Since the start Japheth has expanded the school according to financial support. In 2013 we managed to finalize the first step of the constructions of the facilities but back them it was very cramped. Classrooms was separated by curtains so they could have two classes in the same room. Half of the school had a temporary tin roof which it rained in through. Despite these flaws and lack of educational material the school succeeded to get good exam results. In 2012 the school was no. 22 among 116 schools in the district and today the school is among the top 10! The work has proceeded slowly but in 2014 a new school building with roof, windows and doors was finalized. Last year we managed to have the toilets completed. This year’s project is to build a dining area which also can be used as an assembly room.
Beside the construction work there is also great need for donations for food, water, salaries, educational material, furniture etc. There is a lot more to be done, and we encourage everyone who can to help us create new opportunities and to help the children at the New Hope School in Mombasa.
